In this epic poem, Beowulf takes part in battle with Grendel. Beowulf takes off Grendel's arm, and Grendel escapes from Herot into the wild where he bites the dust. Grendel's mom gets some answers concerning the passing of her child and looks for revenge. She goes to Herot, and gets terrified and seeks isolation in her lair. Beowulf and his army search her out in her cave under the lake. Beowulf jumps into the lake and kills Grendel's mom with a sharp edge he took from Grendel's mom's fortune. He takes her head and the edge back to the surface. Beowulf is known as a hero, a saint even. He comes back to his home in Geatland where he in the long run gets to be Ruler of the Geats. In the poem, Beowulf's last fight is with a winged serpent that assaults his kin. He vanquishes the winged serpent however turns out to be mortally injured in the process. The poem closes with Beowulf's burial and his kin grieving the loss of their great ruler.
